Zillah vs Granger Football

Here are some of the facts:

First Meeting – 1929 Granger 24, Zillah 0

These teams played every year from 1933 until 1988 (Granger was in the SCB in '89 & '90)

They have since played every year from 1991 - present.

They played twice a year from 1933-1935.

These two teams have never met in state playoffs.

Zillah lead the series 40-33-4.

Biggest blowout: Granger 65 - Zillah 0 (1974)

Longest winning streak: Zillah 12 games (1939-1950)

P. Williams returned the opening kickoff for a TD and the rout was on, he would add a second TD.  F. Burnett and R. Williams each had 3 TDs.

1934 – Zillah 39 – Granger 0
Zillah halfback Wiez was knocked unconscious while scoring the games opening TD, and would not come to until the game was over.

Barker had TD runs of 35 and 40 yards.

A scoreless tie marks the first Armistice Day match-up between these two teams.

Decker returned an interception for a TD and Turner had a TD run.

The Spartans ran back the opening kickoff, and the Leopards came right back with a score, but that’s all that Zillah could muster up that night. Durham 2 TDs, Moorhead, Clark and Bryan each with one TD.

Fritz Rompel playing in his first game of the season due to a leg injury leads the way passing.

Dwain Box threw a 40 yard TD pass and ran for two more TDs.

1943- Zillah 38 – Granger 0                                                                                                          
The Spartans were unbeaten coming in, but Zillah wins the game to win the “B” championship. Corky Hilton had a 3 yard TD run, Gerald Houghton passed for a TD and ran in two more, Don Bainter both caught a TD pass and threw a TD pass.

1944 – Zillah 46 – Granger 0                                                                                                        
This game was played on Nov. 10th rather than the 11th

This game was played on Friday, Nov. 9th since Armistice Day was on Sunday

Al Tate had two rushing TDs and threw a TD pass to George Leuning. Zillah wins the league championship with an undefeated season, the only scar on their record is a 13-13 tie with Naches.

This win puts Zillah in a three-way tie atop the Yakima Valley “B”

1949- Zillah 42 – Granger 6
Zillah wins the Yakima Valley “B” championship with this victory

Everet Waterhouse had a TD pass for the Spartans, But it was Zillah’s Fred Rowland who couldn’t be stopped that day. Rowland passes for a TD, runs for a TD, then recieves a lateral at the 5 yard line after a completed pass play and take it in for his third score of the game.

1951- Granger 13 – Zillah 6                                                                                                          
Stan Harris threw a 25 yard TD pass to Mike Katsoras for the Leopards only score. Dick Kinder has a 3 yard TD run and Everet Waterhouse throws the winning TD pass of 15 yards.

1952- Granger 13 – Zillah 6                                                                                                          
Dale Dean and Joe Maltos each score TDs for the Spartans. Red Lewis hits John Sprenger for a 12 yard pass for Zillah’s only score.

1953- Zillah 6 – Granger 6                                                                                    
Scoreless through 3 quarters on a muddy field. Grangers Mark Baehm scores on a 4 yard run in the 4th quarter. But the leopards come back to tie the game with just over a minute to play when Don Holden hits Mike Katsaros for a TD.

1954- Zillah 25 – Granger 7                                                                                                          
Zillah’s Kay Stone runs in 2 TDs and Don Holden throws for another.

1955- Zillah 32 – Granger 0                                                                                                          
The leopards defense holds Granger to just 34 yards of offense, while Zillah’s offense rolled up 326 yards. Bob Martin throws 2 TD passes.

1956- Granger 60 – Zillah 12                                                                                                       
The Spartan’s Jim Dills scores 3 TDs and Dale Walker scores 2 TDs.

1957- Granger 21 – Zillah 0                                                                                                          
Rich Siekawitch ran for 118 yards, passed for 54 yards and caught passes for 67 yards, scoring 2 TDs.

1958- Zillah 32 – Granger 7                                                                                                          
Zillah’s Ron Delp threw 3 TD passes, two of them to Roger Anderson. Anderson also throws a TD pass to George Davido.

1959- Granger 20 – Zillah 0                                                                                                          
This game was played early in the ’59 season, rather than the traditional Armistice Day match up, the Armistice Day game resumed the following year. Norm Parker scored 2 TDs for the Spartans and Roy Gasca scored one.

1960- Granger 40 – Zillah 12                                                                                                       
It was a game of halfs, in the first half, Zillah’s Paul Wolf scored on a 57 yard run and a 90 yard kickoff return. But in the second half Norm Parker scores 4 TDs for the Spartans, finishing with 156 rushing yards. Wolf ends the game with 148 rushing yards.

1961- Granger 7 – Zillah 0                                                                                                
Zillah is held to just 74 yards rushing and 71 yards passing. (no further details)

1962- Zillah 23 – Granger 12                                                                                                       
Zillah’s Richard Wentz rolled up 260 rushing yards. Daryl Larsen has 2 TD runs for the Leopards. Al Meza scores on a 12 yard run and a 70 yard kickoff return for the Spartans.

1963- Zillah 18 – Granger 0           (played in Toppenish)                                                                     
Each team came in with only one win on the season. Bill Hibbs did all the damage for the Leopards, he runs for a TD, throws a TD pass, and returns a punt 60 yards for a TD. 

1964- Granger 35 – Zillah 6                                                                                                          
The Spartans out rush the Leopards 257 to 56. Granger’s Ron Nash scores 3 TDs and Dennis Harris scores 2 TDs.

1965- Zillah 14 - Granger-12                                                                                                        
The Spartans lead 12-0 at halftime. Neal Franklin returned an interception 45 yards for a TD. Then in the final minute, Zillah’s Gary Lantis hit Larry Hale on a 25 yard pass, but he is hit by Gary Hopper just short of the goal line and the ball flies into the air, it is caught by Ron Everts as he crosses the goal line for the Leopards victory.

1966- Zillah 21 – Granger 20                                                                                                       
With 40 seconds left in the game Larry Hale scores his second TD of the game to tie it and Neal Franklin’s PAT kick give the Leopards the win. Randy Hull scored on TD runs of 45 & 40 yards for the Spartans.

1967- Granger 22 – Zillah 12                                                                                                       
Ray Maltos intercepts 3 Zillah passes to lead the Spartans. Granger finishes in a 3 way tie for the championship of the Cross Valley League. Randy Hull ran for two TDs and threw one more to Henry Mengarelli. This is the last year the helmet presentation to the winning school is mentioned.

1968- Granger 7 – Zillah 0                                                                                                
Played on a wet and muddy Granger field, the Spartans score in the 2nd Qtr. (no further details)

1969- Granger 53 – Zillah 0                                                                                              
Granger rolled up 413 yards of offense compared to Zillah’s 24 yards. Ray Maltos ran for 2 TDs and threw for another. Dave Pearson scored 2 TDs, one rushing and one receiving. Dave Bates intercepted two passes for the Spartans.

1970- Granger 6 – Zillah 0                                                                                                
At a very foggy Granger field, the Spartans rushed for 160 yards, while the Leopards rushed for 66 and passed for 58. The only score of the game came in the 2nd qtr. On a Terry Andrews 9 yard run.

1971- Granger 20 – Zillah 0

1972- Granger 26 – Zillah 14                                                                                                       
The leopards had narrowed the score to 20-14 and were driving, but Eugene Wak Wak intercepted a pass and took it back all the way 51 yds for the TD with 5 minutes left. Rick Lane passed for 168 yards and 2 TDS on 7 of 11 passing.

1973- Zillah 8 – Granger 2                                                                                                
It is the Leopards first win in the rivalry in 7 years on a rainy muddy field, in a game where there were 8 fumbles. In the 2nd Qtr. Buddy Cluck hit Randy Delp for a 40 yd. TD pass, and Rocky Weible ran in the point after. Granger’s only score came on a botched snap on a punt that went through the end zone. The Spartans had a late drive deep in Zillah territory, but freshman Tony Raspberry intercepted a pass to seal the deal.

1974- Granger 65 – Zillah 0                                                                                                          
Zillah is held to just 23 yards of offense. The Spartans Richard Lane rolls up 231 yards on the ground and 4 TDs. Louis Alcala adds 2 more rushing TDs. Charles Golob is all over the field on defense, with 4 solo tackles, 12 assists, a fumble recovery and an interception.

1975- Zillah 9 – Granger 0                                                                                                
Buddy Cluck goes 55 yds. for a TD on the first play of the game, finishing with 173 rushing yrds. Ralph Lyons adds a 27 yard field goal for the Leopards. Two Spartan drives inside the Zillah 10 yard line are stopped by Leopard interceptions. 

1976- Zillah 28 – Granger 6                                                                                                          
Zillah spoils Granger’s Homecoming with Brian Nobbs running for 177 yds. and 3 TDs. Nobbs scores on runs of 2, 3 & 8 yards.

1977- Granger 13 – Zillah 6                                                                                                          
A 6-6 tie in the 4th qtr., the Spartans block a punt and end up with the ball on Zillah’s 35 yard line. The next play is a 35 yard TD strike from Mike Goodwin to Gene Villa, only the third Spartans completion of the game. Mark Puyear ran for 177 yds. on 28 carries including a 30 yard TD dash.

1978- Granger 41 – Zillah 12                                                                                                       
The Spartans ranked #1 in the state, remain undefeated with Mark Puyear rushing for 180 yds on 13 carries and 2 TDs, he also threw a TD pass and caught a 52 yard TD pass.

1979- Zillah 3 – Granger 0                                                                                                
Kalen Garrison kicks a 28 yd. field goal on Zillah’s first possession and it stood up  for the rest of the night.

1980- Zillah 8 – Granger 6                                                                                                
Zillah is playing without starting QB Mario Gallegos. Granger QB Donnie Mengarelli  throws a 70 yd. TD pass to Robert Elizondo in the 2nd qtr., but the Spartans miss the PAT. It looked like it would stand as the only score of the game. Leopards back-up QB Billy Stewart is knocked out of the game and sophomore Brad Delp is called on. With 29 seconds left on a 4th and 10 play, Delp hits Scott Daughs for a 39 yd. touchdown pass. On the point after attempt, the snap is fumbled, and Kalen Garrison finds Daughs again on a pass,  for a two point conversion, helping the Leopards on their way to winning the Valley “A” Championship.

1981- Granger 15 – Zillah 0                                                                                              
Granger ruins Zillah’s homecoming as Jesse Salinas had TD passes of 16 & 35 yds. To lead the Spartans.

1982- Granger 35 – Zillah 7                                                                                                          
Shon Raymond rushes for 229 yds on 30 carries and 3 TDS in the Spartan onslaught.

1983- Granger 13 – Zillah 12                                                                                                       
Both teams come in without a win. Despite two TDs from Zillah running back Greg Hall, big plays from Ray Elizondo lead the Spartans to victory. Elizondo scores on a run of 67 yds. and throws a 78 yd TD pass.

1984- Granger 21 – Zillah 7                                                                                                          
Neil Hull rushed for 90 yds. on just 5 carries including a 74 yd, TD run. Ramiro Solis added a 33 yd. TD run.

1985- Granger 16 – Zillah 0                                                                                                          
Ray Elizondo threw for 166 yds. including a 72 yd. TD pass to Mike LaFollette.

1986- Granger 0 – Zillah 0 -2 OT                                                                                                 
Zillah had only 160 yds. of offense and Granger 190 yds. of offense. The Spartans had an apparent TD in the second overtime called back for a penalty. Both coaches agree to end the game after the second OT- as it was a non-league contest.

1987- Zillah 13 – Granger 6                                                                                                          
Bryan Fletcher led the leopards with 130 yds. rushing. Todd Widner hit Kevin Davis on a halfback pass for the winning TD.

1988- Granger 26 – Zillah 21                                                                                                       
Gabe Esqueda threw for nearly 250 yds. and 2 TDs, including a 72 yd. TD strike to Jay Hocking.

1991- Zillah 36 - Granger 6                                                                                                          
Eli Whitaker, Jason Pollock, Dan Mendoza, Andy Campbell & Reis Wolf all scored TDs for the leopards. Granger scored on the last play of the game to avoid the shut out.

1992- Zillah 54 – Granger 0                                                                                                          
Jason Pollock threw 3 TD passes, two of them to Brian Reed on plays of 39 & 17 yds.

1993- Zillah 54 – Granger 0                                                                                                          
Eli Whitaker touches the ball only four times in the game, scoring three TDs. Whitaker scores on runs of 34 & 36 yds. and a 48 yd. Punt return.

1994- Zillah 37 – Granger 12                                                                                                       
Ryan Waldman scores 2 rushing TDs and Justin Jorgenson throws for one TD and runs for another to lead the leopards to victory.

1995 – Zillah 42 – Granger 7
The Leopards take advantage of 4 interceptions which they convert to TDs. 6 different players score TDs for Zillah, which claims the Valley “A” West title.

1996- Granger 18 – Zillah 14                                                                                                       
A Leopards team  that is 7-0, ranked #1 in the state, and beating opponents by an average of more than 28 points goes to Granger to meet the lowly Spartans. But the Spartans are more than ready for them,  handing Zillah its first loss of the season. Jimmy Salinas runs for one TD and throws for another on 13 of 23 passing for 146 yds.

1997- Zillah 20 – Granger 14 –OT                                                                                               
Jimmy Salinas scores two rushing TDs for the Spartans and Kris Breum scores two rushing TDs for the Leopards, including the game winner in overtime.

1998- Zillah 33 – Granger 14
Tad Rowe rushed for 205 yards and 2 TDs while his teammate Kris Breum ran for 108 yards.

1999- Zillah 60 – Granger 6                                                                                                          
Tad Rowe leads the Leopards onslaught with 240 yds. on 13 carries and 3 TDs.

2000- Zillah 60 – Granger 0                                                                                                          
Andy Collins leads the Leopards with 273 yds. passing and 6 TDs. Aramando Valadez added 115 yds. rushing on 16 carries.

2001- Zillah 42 – Granger 7
Andy Collins did the damage again, throwing for 212 yds. and 3 TDs on 14 of 19 passing, and adding a TD run as well.

2002- Zillah 40 – Granger 6                                                                                                          
Shane Stonemetz ran for 125 yds. and Louis Santana threw for 170 yds. and 2 TDs on 11 of 14 passing.

2003- Zillah 28 – Granger 7                                                                                                          
Louis Santana on 18 of 24 passing piles up 274 yds. and 2 TDS through the air.

2004- Granger 20 – Zillah 7                                                                                                          
In Granger’s first win in the rivalry in 8 years, it was Mario Mengarelli doing the damage scoring two TDs and a 2 pt. Conversion.

2005- Granger 22 – Zillah 14                                                                                                       
Mario strikes again! Mengarelli scores a TD with just 47 seconds left in the game to give the Spartans their second straight defeat of the Leopards.

2006- Granger 20 – Zillah 6                                                                                                          
Mario one more time!!! The Spartans take the opening possesion and drive right into Zillah territory, and on a 4th and goal play from the 11 Mengarelli hits Ryan Arriaga for a TD. Later in the first half Zillah’s Tyler Torrez runs for a TD from 4 yards out to tie the game at 6. Two plays later Mario is flushed out of the pocket and goes 60 yards for a TD, Granger leads 12-6.  The game was sealed when Chase Carpenter went around the left end for a 42 yard touchdown run and Mengarelli and Arriaga hooked up again for the 2 point conversion.

2007- Zillah 13 – Granger 0
This was a defensive struggle most of the night. Zillah’s Jade Patterson scored on a 5 yard run in the 2nd Qtr. It looked like Granger would tie the game with about 6 minutes left, but on 4th and goal from the one yard line they fumbled. Tyler Torres ripped off a 60 yard run on the next play, capping a 73 yd. Rushing night. The game should have ended 7-0, but the Zillah QB took a knee on 4th down with 0.7 seconds on the clock, to give Granger one more play. Mychal Lopez scrambled looking for a receiver, and ended up tossing the ball in the air backwards when he was about to be tackled, it was picked up by Kane Koerner and taken in for a TD to result in the final score.
