Fall Band Syllabus
Objectives:
Zillah High School Concert Band Fall 07
Syllabus
Welcome to a new school year, a new band room, a new choir teacher, and a new philosophy. The 07-08 school year is going to be the best yet, we have many great performances and activities planned.
New Band Room:
1. No food or drink (other than water) during class. Before School and at lunch is OK as long as we keep the garbage picked up all the time.
2. Only percussionists may touch the percussion instruments.
3. Do not touch or lean against acoustic tiles.
4. Only enter offices if asked.
5. Storage rooms are not for socializing, no hanging out in there, get your stuff done and get out of the storage areas.
6. This is not your locker do not store personal stuff in band room.
7. Your instrument, music, and all of your stuff has a cubby put everything away everyday.
Philosophy:
1. The band belongs to all of us, we are all responsible for success, failure, and attitude.
2. Performance is part of the process, not the goal.
3. The goal is to give our best everytime we put the instruments together. (Rehearsal, Pep Band, Concerts, practicing, etc.)
4. Leadership is essential and for everyone.
Class Expectations:
1. Be on time, with all equipment everyday.
2. Do your best every day. This means getting better. You will be tested!! See weekly check.
3. Each student must participate in $50 worth of fundraising. (Steak Feed, Magazine, Concessions, suckers, anything else we can think of as the school year goes on.)
4. Attend the concert.
Grading:
30% concert
30% participation
20% Weekly check ups
20% Football games
Concert – Show up and play your part you get full credit.
Participation – You will be givin a weekly participation grade. You will receive full credit unless you have unexcused tardies, forget your instrument, or for some reason choose not to play.
Weekly Check up – This is how you will be graded on your playing ability. Ideally this turns into zero playing tests. I will assign a particular passage to each section every week. If on Thursday the section sounds good all points will be earned by all students in the section. If the passage does not sound good it will be a scheduled Playing test the following Monday.
Football Games – There are 5 home games this year. That means each game is worth 4% of your overall grade. All 5 games are required for everyone. If you are not able to attend a game, you may find a sub (someone not already in band or Jazz Band this term) and then you will receive full credit.
Attendance
Goal: Class time is important, and thus, if a student misses class time in an excessive manner, they will not be as successful as those that are there. It is important that those with excessive attendance issues have the opportunity to make up that time and remain successful in the classroom.
Policy: No CREDIT (NC) will be earned in an individual class for each of the following “attendance issues”:
--after every NON SCHOOL RELATED ABSENCE above 5 in a term
--after every TARDY above 5 in a term
--upon the 1st UNEXCUSED absence in a term
Students have the opportunity to make up each attendance issue listed above in ATTENDANCE SCHOOL to avoid the No Credit for each class.
Students must make an appointment during one of the scheduled sessions of attendance school, or through contract with an individual teacher, in order to regain credit for that particular class.
Every attendance issue requires 50 minutes of approved, on task time. This time will be documented using the appropriate form that will be signed by the supervisor.
Once the time is made up and documented, the student will regain credit for that class. Any further absences or tardies will again result in loss of credit unless the student makes those up as well.
You will make up the attendance school with me in the bandroom. You will be making up time by practicing. Remember this is school policy and you will not get credit if you do not makeup the time in attendance school. Let me try and simplify, every tardy and day absent over 5 you will have to makeup 50 mins per class period. For example if you are sick for 2 days and it happens to be your 6th and 7th days of being gone, you will have to make up 10 days of 50min attendance school.
Leadership Roles
President – This person would be responsible to stop rehearsals when the attitude of the group is turning negative. This is the most important role in helping us be successful. This person will have to be a person who will lead by example, also responsible for warming up the band prior to all performances. This person is also in charge of equipment. Making sure we have help moving all of our stuff for different performances.
Vice President– This person would be responsible for encouraging all band students to do there very best in every rehearsal. This may be done through verbal comments to the individual only, or through Mr. Schoonover. This is not just playing right notes and rhythms. This is being on time, participating in all activities, and learning the music to the best of their ability. We are a band of different abilities and we need to understand that. The most important part of this persons job is to be the peppy leader of the band. The yeller and screamer getting all of us peppy at games and concerts.
Secretary – This person will be responsible for taking attendance every class as well as every football game. This person will also help anytime we are making lists for fundraisers, volunteers, etc. This person will also work with Mr. Schoonover to create a student data base with phone numbers and emails.
Librarians – Dealing with all of our sheet music is a big and important job. We have a lot of music and a new system for storing and tracking music. These people would be responsible for passing out, copying, collecting, sorting, and filing music.
Fundraising – We have a great need for successful fund raisers. Our accounts are very low and we have had 2 years of poor fundraising. The fundraised money is what keeps us doing all the stuff we love to do. (Pep band, Jazz festivals, Contest, Guests, etc.) This person would help Mr. Schoonover in implementing fund raisers and encouraging everyone to participate.
Pep Band Director – This person will choose songs and conduct the pep band at all basketball games, and halftime of football games. Person must be able to stay focused, and lead songs while playing their instrument.
