To ZHS Students grades 9-11 and parents: 

This is a special page updated each month listing scholarships that Zillah High School students in grades 9-11 may choose to apply for.  It represents a data base that has been built over the past 27 years.  Set a goal to contact these committees early enough that you can receive an application and then get it back to the committee at least TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE DEADLINE!  

I am often asked questions, "Are there are any scholarships that underclassman can apply for?"   Here is a list of scholarship opportunities open to ZHS students that I have found over the years. 
 
 ROTC Scholarships: Several hundred awards given nation wide to students who can major in various areas of study but commit to enrolling in Military Science ROTC (Army Air Force, Navy, Marine) programs.  Upon graduation the student must complete a tour of duty with a branch of the Military.  Scholarships usually cover tuition, books, and fees, plus a $100 a month stipend.  Scholarships are renewable for 4 years.  Students during their junior year should contact the Military for details. Senate Youth Program Hearst Foundation scholarship: 100 awards of $2000 for students who attended the senate youth program internship and who are juniors or seniors in high school student government positions.   Write: 90 New Montgomery Street, Suite 1212 , San Francisco , CA 94105 . http://www.hearstfdn.org/ussyp/    Due September 15th.
 
Daughters of the American Revolution, Sarah Soul Patton History scholarship: 1 award of various amounts for a student to study history.  Must be a junior in high school when applying.   Write: NSDAR 1776 D street NW , Washington , D.C. 20006-5392 http://www.dar.org/natsociety/edout_scholar.cfm    Due November 1st.
 
Herf Jones/Quill & Scroll yearbook excellence contest: open to students 9-12 who are staff members of a high school yearbook.  if a senior wins this award, they are then eligible to compete for the Edward j Nell memorial scholarship ($500) in journalism.   Write: quill & scroll society, school of journalism, university of Iowa, Iowa city, IA 52242-1528 http://www.uiowa.edu/~quill-sc/Contests/contests.html .   Due November 1st.
 
VFW Voice of Democracy scholarship awards: 6 national awards totaling $33,500, with additional awards for state winners.  Open to students grades 10-12.   Write and record a 3-5 minute script based on a stated patriotic theme.   Write: P.O. SAE engineering scholarship: several awards at various amounts, many of which are renewable, must be a junior or senior in high school, have a 3.5 GPA and be in the 90% on the sat or act exam.   Write: 400 Commonwealth Drive , Warrendale , PA 15096-0001 . http://students.sae.org/awdscholar/scholarships/    Due January 1st.
 
Washington Association for Biomedical Research scholarship: 6 awards up to $1000 for students in grades 10-12.  Applicants write an essay and /or produce a poster.  Students may enter either of the categories.   Write: 200 Broadway, Seattle , WA . 98122-5322 http://www.wabr.org/ .   Due January 10th.
 
Discover Card Tribute Award scholarship:  9 awards in each state,  plus 9 nation wide awards with over $750,000 awarded.  Must be a junior, US citizen, have a 2.75 or higher GPA, and plan to attend either a vocational technical school, community college, art/humanities college, or study at four year school after graduation.   Write: P.O. Junior Masonic Achievement Awards.  The local Masonic lodges recognize the top 5 junior boys and top 5 junior girls from ZHS based on submitted applications.  Applications are available in the Guidance Center or on line at http://www.zillahschools.org/financial-aid/scholarshipforms.htm  Due to the counselor by January 15.
 
Harry Singer Foundation essay contest: open to any ZHS junior or senior.  Students write an essay (750-1000 words) on a topic given each year.  If 10 students in ZHS participate a student at Zillah will win a 1st prize of $100, a 2nd prize of $50 and a 3rd prize of $25.   Write: P.O. National Peace Essay contest: awards at state of $1000, 500, $250, & $100, and national levels with the top prize of $10,000 and an expense paid trip to Washington DC .  Open to any high school student (grades 9-12).  Students write an essay on a current topic.  See your current English or Social Studies teacher or go http://www.usip.org/ed/npec/ , or Write: USIP 1550 M Street NW, suite 700 , Washington , D.C. 20006 .  Due February 1st.
 
AAA traffic safety poster contest: a local award of $100, with chances to compete for national awards totaling $13,000.  Open to students 9-12.  Students design a poster and submit it for judging.   Write: P.O. Christopher’s "You Make a Difference" poster contest: 8 prizes with a first prize of $1000.  Open to students grades 9-12.  Students create a poster on the selected theme.   Write: The Christopher’s, 12 East 48th Street , New York , NY . 10017 or youth@christophers.org or go to http://www.christophers.org/contests.html     Due January 31st.
 
Army "Stay in School/Stay Off Drugs" essay contest:  awards of $200 and $100 for the author (grade 9-12) of the most original and persuasive essay to  "stay in school/stay off drugs.   Write: P.O. Box 3957 , Seattle , WA 98124-3957 .   Due February 27.
 
 Foreign Service Association of the United States National Essay Contest.  awards up to $2500 for a student grades 9-12 to write an essay on “ America ’s foreign service, how it works for me”.  Apply on line at http://www.afsa.org or Write: 2101 E Street NW, Washington , D.C. 20037 , eaton@afsa.org.   Due March 1st.
 
Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) essay contest: several levels of awards with a $2000 national prize.  Open to juniors and seniors in high school.  Students must submit an essay on a current topic.  Write: Chairman, Knight Essay contest committee, 550 Lebo Blvd. #5 , Bremerton , WA . 998310-2694.   Due March 1st.
 
Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center creative writing contest: awards up to $200.  open to any student 9-12.  Student writes an essay of 2000 words or less relating to the holocaust.  Write: 2031 3rd avenue , Seattle , WA . 98121. http://www.wsherc.org/   Due March 2nd.
 
Drug-Free Washington Poster Design Contest:  Open to students grades 9-12.  Students design a poster and submit for judging.  Scholarship amounts vary each year.    Write: PO Box 43094 , Olympia , WA 98504-3094 or email sas@liq.wa.gov  Due March 8.
 
Skirball essay contest: 50 awards including a grand prize of $5000.  Students in grades 10-12 living in the western states may enter by writing an essay of from 3-4 pages on a current topic.  Write: 635 south Harvard Blvd , Los Angeles , CA 90005-2511 .   Due March 15th.
 
Society of Professional Journalists essay contests: awards up to $1000.  Open to students in grades 9-12.  Each year an essay topic is selected.  Students complete an essay and submit for judging.   Write: 912 Seventh Avenue #B, Seattle, WA 98104, or (206)-621-5258 or www.nwlink.com/~spj Due March 15th.
 
Ayn Rand Institute "Anthem" essay scholarship: 31awards of up to $1000 to 9th & 10th grade students.  Students write an essay on the Ayn Rand novelette "Anthem".   Write: P.O. UNEP International Photographic Competition on the Environment: awards up to $1000, open to students 9-12.  Students submit their original photographs regarding the environment.   Write: P.O. Box 4320 , Manhasset , NY 11030-4320 http://www.unep-photo.com/ .   Due April 1st.  
 

Presidents Freedom Scholarship : Any Junior or Senior student who can document 100 or more hours of community service within a 12 month period is invited to submit the documentation of those hours for the Presidential Freedom Scholarship.  2 ZHS students may be nominated for this scholarship.  Submit your documentation on a letterhead of the organization for whom will verify your community service and a resume to Mr. Griffin.  http://www.cns.gov/scholarships/aboutprogram.html Due April 11. 

United Nations Association of USA National High School Essay Contest: 3 awards up to $1000 open to students in grades 9-12.  Student must submit an essay of up to 1500 words on a selected annual theme.  Additional information at www.unausa.org. Ayn Rand institute "Fountainhead" essay scholarship: 16 nation wide scholarships totaling $15,000, must  Write an essay on one of three topics regarding the novel "Fountainhead”.  Open to juniors and seniors.   Write: P.O. Generations for Peace Essay Contest: 2 awards up to $1500 for a high school junior or senior.  Send a SASE and $1 processing fee to receive the annual application and topic information.  Write: 1314 SW Park Avenue , Portland , OR 97201 .  Due April 15th.
 
Signet Classic Scholarship Essay Contest:  5 awards of $1000 open to juniors or seniors in high school.  See web page for annual contest rules update.  Students write and essay and must be nominated by their English teacher.  Visit www.penguinputnam.com/academic or write Penguin-Putnam Inc., 375 Hudson Street , New York , NY 10014 .  Due April 15th.
 
WSU Regents Scholarship Program: 2 Juniors from ZHS who plan to attend WSU can compete to earn up to $45,000 each in scholarships.  Must have a GPA of at least 3.80 and must have earned at lest a 26 on the ACT or 1200 on the SAT. Complete an application form and return to the High school Principal.  Applications are available in the Guidance Center or at the website http://www.zillahschools.org/financial-aid/scholarshipforms.htm  Due April 15.
 
Health Physics Society scholarship: awards up to $500.  Open to any high school student.  Students should be interested in the profession of health physics.  Students must write an essay of 2000 words or less.   Write: P.O. Box 564 , Richland , WA 99352-0564 .   Due April 30th.
 
ThinkQuest Internet Challenge: awards from $100-$25000.  Open to students grades 9-12 who are not yet 20 years old.  This is a contest to as a team of at least 2 students and 1 teacher/coach create web-based educational tools.  Five categories include; Arts & Literature, Science & Mathematics, Social Sciences, Sports & Health, and Interdisciplinary studies. Bruce Angqin Memorial/Wescon challenge  scholarship: 3 awards of up t0 $5000 to a junior student to study electronics technology, science, or engineering.   Go to http://coe.isu.edu/ieee/wescon/ for information or contact Gene Stuffle at gene.stuffle@isu.edu  for additional information. The Holocaust Remembrance Essay Contest: Several awards ranging from $2500-$10000 for students in grades 9-12.  Students must research and submit an original essay of not more than 1200 words.  Each year a new writing prompt is given. Quill and Scroll Foundation scholarship: several awards of $500.  Students compete in a writing/photo contest and must be interested in journalism.    Write: School of Journalism , University of Iowa , Iowa City , IA 52242-1528   http://www.uiowa.edu/~quill-sc/Contests/contests.html  Due May 10th.

Nordstrom's Scholarship Program for Juniors: The program is offered to high school juniors and five scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each to be paid in annual installments of $2,500 over a four-year period, depending on eligibility. Nordstrom has made these scholarships available in an effort to support and encourage the pursuit of higher education and create career opportunities.  Forms can be found at www.zillahschools.org/financial-aid/scholarshipforms.htm . Multiple Sclerosis Association scholarship: 1 award of $5,000 and 3 of $,1000. Open to students in grades 10-12.  students write a 300-500 word essay and obtain at least one sponsor.   Write: 706 Haddonfield Road , Cherry Hill NJ 08002 .  http://www.parentsinc.org/finaid/aid6233.html  Due June 5th

CHS Foundation Anniversary Scholarships: 25 awards of $1000 for juniors.  Students write an essay on what will be needed in the future to keep rural communities strong and viable.
