This is a special page listing scholarships for Zillah High School students.  This list has been been built over the past 30 years and is organized by the calendar year.   ZHS Seniors are advised to check each week the ZHS Scholarship Application Forms page to download actual forms.  Seniors, set a goal to contact the scholarship groups early so you can return a finished application at least TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE DEADLINE!

January

Washington Crossing Foundation scholarship: 50 state winner awards of $1000, plus 32 national awards of $5000, for students who are interested in a career in government service.  Must write a 200 word essay as part of the process.  Visit: www.gwcf.org or Write PO Box 1976 , Washington Crossing , PA 18977 .  Due January 1st.

John F Kennedy Profiles in Courage Essay Contest: An essay contest open to high school students in grades 9-12 with prizes up to $5000.00.  Go to the website www.jfklibrary.org/ and find specific information updated each year under the Educational Programs link. Due January 5.

United Nations Association of USA National High School Essay Contest: 3 awards up to $1000 open to students in grades 9-12.  Student must submit an essay of up to 1500 words on a selected annual theme.  Additional information at www.unasd.org/modelun/essay_contest.html .  Due January 5.

Alliance for Young Artists and Writers (Scholastic Art) Awards: 260 awards of $4000, to study art, photography or writing.  Students submit portfolios and photos of their work for review.  www.artandwriting.org/Awards Write PO Box 732, New York, NY 10003   Due January 10th.

Burger King Scholars Program: Awards from $1000-$25,000 for both non Burger King students and also for those who are affiliated with Burger King. To apply go to www.scholarshipamerica.org/burgerkingscholars Due January 10.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program: up to 30,000 awards which can equal full tuition and fees for students who are low income and also belong to a minority group such as African-American, Native American Indian, Hispanic or Asian-Pacific Islanders. There is an opportunity for renewal for up to four years of tuition support. Students must be a US citizen, have a 3.30 GPA or higher, be evaluated on academic accomplishments in  math and science,  have demonstrated leadership and community service in the school and community and have financial need.  Contacts: 1-877-690-4677 or 206-652-1993 or go to www.gmsp.org.    Due January 10.

Northwest Career Colleges Federation Careers that Work Scholarships:  ZHS may nominate five seniors for a $1000 scholarships to attend technical schools that is a member, such as Perry Technical Institute.  Application forms are online at www.zillahschools.org/financial-aid/scholarshipforms.htm  Turn completed applications forms into Mr. Griffin.  Due January 10.

National MS Society, Greater Northwest Chapter Scholarship Program: We offer scholarships to those with MS, or to the children of people living with MS who are entering an accredited post-secondary school for the first time. Scholarships range between $1,500 and $3,000. Recipients are selected based on academic performance, financial need, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and essays about the impact MS has had on their lives. If have MS, or a parent living with MS, you may be eligible for a scholarship. Elk's Club National Foundation "Most Valuable Student" Scholarships: 2 local awards of $150.  Winners compete for district, state, regional, and national awards in a scholarship pool worth over $2,600,000.  Students must have demonstrated outstanding school/community service, leadership, academic achievement, and have clear cut goals for the future.  The application must go to a local lodge first for judging.  Call 1-800-825-ELKS or go to  www.waelks.net/scholarships.htm  for further information. National Honor Society Scholarship: 250 awards of $1000.  Students must be a senior member of NHS, demonstrated leadership, character, scholarship, and service.   www.nhs.us/scholarshipsandawards/nhsscholarshipprogram.aspx. KFC Colonel's Scholars Program: Provides funding for Tuition, Fees, Books, Room and Board.  Awards can be up to $5,000 per year. Washington State Elks Vocational Grant Scholarship: several awards of various amounts for seniors who enroll in a vo-tech or community college in pursuit of a certificate, diploma, or associate degree.  State winners are eligible to compete for the elk's national foundation, vocational grant program: 321 awards of $2000, renewable for a 2nd year, to students to enroll in a vocational-technical course at 2 year college or technical school. Stonehouse Golf Youth Scholarship: 2 awards of $1000 for any field of study.  is open to high school seniors who are planning to attend college and who participated in high school golf for at least two seasons. Playing golf in college is not a criterion to apply. To be eligible for this award, you must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Your application will be evaluated on a combination of categories, which will include: academics, golf accomplishments and community service participation. Mary Monroe Davis Memorial Scholarship: The Yakima Rotary Trust has established a scholarship program to assist residents of Yakima County who plan to continue their education in undergraduate study.  A total of $125,000 in scholarships is expected to be granted each year. National/Welch's Fred Killian Memorial Scholarship:  A $1,000 opportunity with the scholarship criteria: parent or guardian is a member of the National Grape Cooperative or an employee of Welch’s;  minimum GPA of 2.5; active in community leadership;  and seeking further education in an accredited educational program in the United States. Applications are found at www.cfncw.org. NAAPAE Scholarship: The National Association for Asian and Pacific American Education (NAAPAE) invites high school seniors to participate in its scholarship program. Although the scholarship committee will consider all applicants; the primary purpose of this scholarship is to support students who plan to become teachers.  NAAPAE will award up to four $500 scholarships to high school seniors who meet the following qualifications: (1) are of Asian or Pacific Islander (API) descent; (2) are actively involved in extracurricular activities in school; (3) have outstanding academic records; (4) are young leaders who show concern and commitment to Asian/Pacific Islander communities; and (5) are citizens or resident aliens of the United States or Canada. National FFA scholarship awards: several hundred awards.  By filling out one form you will automatically apply for awards from 77 different companies offering from 1 to 5 scholarships each, ranging from $200 to $4000, some of which are renewable.  An information packet is available each year.  This should be checked to determine which scholarships you are eligible for.  Contact your local FFA advisor or go to www.ffa.org/programs/GrantsAndScholarships/Scholarships/Pages/default.aspx.  Due February 15th.

The American Cancer Society Offers Scholarships For Cancer Survivors: The American Cancer Society's scholarship program is designed to ease the financial and emotional hardships associated with fighting cancer and to assist young cancer survivors reach their academic potential and fulfill their career dreams. Masonic Council Outstanding Student Scholarship: ZHS students are invited to apply for one of 24 $1000 scholarships.  For questions contact the local lodge which is Sunnyside Lodge #138 located at 6th and Harrison in Sunnyside, WA.  The Public Schools Chairman is Robert T. SCAC Principal's Association Scholarship:  Awards from $500-$1000 for students to continue their study beyond high school. Students must be a senior currently enrolled and in good standing at a member high school from the South Central Athletic Conference (SCAC) of Washington State.  ZHS Seniors  may download an application at www.zillahschools.org/financial-aid/scholarshipforms.htm  Due to the principal by February 24.

The Lower Valley Children's Fund: a non-profit organization founded by a group of Lower Yakima Valley teachers, is offering an essay contest to students in grades K-12. Three prizes will be awarded: $250 college scholarship for seniors, $150 summer activity grant, and a $100 Border's Books gift card. Entries must be received before February 25. Solarity Credit Union Scholarship: Five  scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $2000 each to Solarity Credit Union members-You must be a primary member with an account in your own name, or a spouse who is a joint owner on the primary member's account.  Must be enrolled, or will be enrolled, in an accredited college, university or trade school, must have a minimum GPA of 2.0, must be attending college during the school year listed on the scholarship application. Buick Achievers Scholarship: $25,000/year for 100 first-time freshman, renewable up to four years and $2,000/year for an additional 1,000 incoming students.  Scholarships based on Academic achievement, Financial need, Participation and leadership in community and school activities, work experience, educational and career goals, unusual circumstances, and Other criteria: being a first-generation college student, female, minority, military veteran or a dependent of military personnel.  Scholarships will focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) students from high school who plan to continue this study into college.  Go to www.buickachievers.com/  Due February 28th.

Agriliance Scholarship: 20 awards of $1000. The Careers in Agriculture scholarship program sponsored by Agriliance and Croplan Genetics annually awards $1,000 scholarships to 20 high school seniors interested in livestock or agronomy-related studies. Candidates should: be a high school senior planning to enroll in a two- or four-year livestock or agronomy-related curriculum in the fall following high school graduation; demonstrate leadership and academic performance; and write an essay describing why he or she is interested in an agricultural career.  Go to www.agriliance.com/4Careers/scholarships.asp for an application.  Due March 1.

Linda Buschini Memorial Scholarship;  An award of $500 This scholarship is designed to recognize and reward students at Zillah High School who have exemplified good citizenship, service to both school and community, the traits of being a friend to all and a desire to obtain further education and training after high school graduation. Cenex Careers in Agriculture Scholarship: various awards in $1000 increments for high school students interested in study of livestock production or agronomy.  Awards are based on scholastic achievement, leadership, and ability to contribute to agriculture in the future.  Write: PO Box 64039-MS 305, St. Paul , MN . 55164-0089. www.wfcoop.com/scholarships/  Due March 1st.

Chevron Merit Awards: 8 four year awards totaling $7200 to a graduating high school senior, must be used at one of the 8 schools belonging to the independent colleges of Washington (ICW).  Selection criteria are: academic achievement, leadership potential, and school/community involvement.  Even year schools which qualify are Gonzaga, Pacific Lutheran, Seattle Pacific, and Seattle University.  Odd year qualifying schools are St. Martins, University of Puget Sound, Walla Walla, and Whitworth College .  Check with the colleges listed. Due March 1st.

Simon Youth Foundation (Columbia Center Mall) Scholarship: The SYF Community Scholarship Program is available to any high school senior, living in a community that hosts a Simon property, who plans to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school. Scholarships are awarded in the amount up to $1,400. In addition, if applicable, a regional award called “Awards of Excellence” will be given to the top candidate. Students in our area will have the opportunity to win a $2,500 four-year renewable scholarship. Selection procedures include consideration of financial need, past academic performance and future potential, leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, statement of career and educational aspirations and goals, and outside appraisals. The application period for the Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship awards  is Tuesday, January 17, to Thursday, March 1.  Only the first 3,000 applications in each community will be processed. UFCW-21 Scholarship Program: Scholarships offered to UFCW 21 members (Albertson's, Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway or other union grocery and retail stores workers)  and their spouses, domestic partners, and dependents are: Family Scholarships of $2000 will go to applicants who are part of the first generation in their family to attend college. Designated Scholarships of $3,000 will be available to those pursuing a specific area of study. Our focus this year will be Food Progress (Agriculture, culinary arts, food health & safety, food politics). A Four-Year Scholarship of $4,000 will be awarded for 4 years of tuition. These are in addition to our ongoing regular scholarships: Full-time student scholarships of $2,000 each. Washington Apple Education Foundation Scholarship: 133 awards given to a son/daughter of an apple grower or a son/daughter of an employee of an apple grower or dependants of those employed in the apple industry. Washington Association of Vocational Administrators (WAVA) Phyllis Lawson Scholarship: 6 awards of $500 to a senior who has high personal characteristics and has shown high achievement in a vocational area in high school. Washington State Farm Bureau scholarship: 3 awards of $800.  Candidate must be a son or daughter of a Farm Bureau member.  Must enroll in a field of agriculture or a related area.  Write: PO Box 2009 , Olympia , WA . 98507.  www.wsfb.com/programs/scholarships  Due March 1-June 1 depending on county.  

Washington PTA (Congress of Parent-Teacher Association), financial grant program: 55 awards of $1000 for persons interested in a four year school and $500 for persons interested in attending a community college or technical school.  The applicants will be selected on the basis of need, academic achievement, and goals and must meet entrance standards for the school of their choice. Mabuhay Foundation Scholarship Program: Students of  Filipino heritage who are graduating from a Yakima Valley High School are invited to apply for this special scholarship award. Susan G. Komen College Scholarship Program: These awards aid college students facing significant financial burdens due to the loss of a parent (or guardian) to breast cancer or their own breast cancer diagnosis at age 25 or younger. The scholarship awards $10,000 per year (for up to four years) to a student to attend a state university in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Komen scholarship recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, financial need and demonstrated leadership potential. Scholarship recipients serve as Komen Collegiate Ambassadors and must volunteer their time to breast cancer awareness activities for at least 20 hours per semester. NASSP/Herf Jones Leadership Award: 150 awards of $1000.  Local principals are allowed to recognize one outstanding student leader from the senior class. Haz La U Scholarships: This program, launched in partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), aims to award educational grants to eligible Hispanic students pursuing higher education.
