This is a special page listing scholarships for Zillah High School students.  This list has been been built over the past 30 years and is organized by the calendar year.   ZHS Seniors are advised to check each week the ZHS Scholarship Application Forms page to download actual forms.  Seniors, set a goal to contact the scholarship groups early so you can return a finished application at least TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE DEADLINE!

Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War scholarship: $350 award to descendents of veterans of the civil war.  Students must be interested in the study of history and can verify ancestry to the union veteran.  Write 616 west summit Street, Alliance, OH . 44601.  Due January 1st.

Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation Education scholarship: 30 awards of $500-$4000, renewable, for son/daughter of a Weyerhaeuser employee to attend college, community college or technical college/school.  Write 33663 Weyerhaeuser Way South , Tacoma , WA . 98477.  Due January 1st.

CIA Undergraduate Scholar Program: awards vary up to $10,000, renewable,  students must be 18 years old, 900 or better on sat/21 act, 2.75 GPA or higher and study computer science, cartography, engineering, math, economics, physics, linguistics, account or political science.  Write PO Box 2147 , Seattle , WA . 98111-2147.  Due January 3rd.

John F Kennedy Profiles in Courage Essay Contest: An essay contest open to high school students in grades 9-12 with prizes up to $5000.00.  Go to the website http://www.jfklibrary.org/ and find specific information updated each year under the Educational Programs link. Due January 5.

Association for Computer Professionals in Education scholarship: 2 awards of $500, a high school senior who has demonstrated achievement in educational computing and wishes to continue computer studies.  Write c/o Computer Science Department, Portland community college, 12000 SW 49th Street , Portland , OR . 97219.  Due January 8th.

Dupont Science essay awards program: 27 awards up to $1500, open to students grades 7-12, to think, explore, enjoy your own voyage of discovery and share those conclusions with others.  The essay must be between 700 and 1000 words.  Write General Learning Corp.  60 Revere Drive , Northbrook , IL . 60062-1563.  Due January 10th.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program: up to 30,000 awards which can equal full tuition and fees for students who are low income and also belong to a minority group such as African-American, Native American Indian, Hispanic or Asian-Pacific Islanders. There is an opportunity for renewal for up to four years of tuition support. Washington Association for Biomedical Research scholarship: 6 awards up to $1000 for students in grades 10-12.  Applicants write an essay and /or produce a poster.  Students may enter either of the categories.  Write 200 Broadway, Seattle , WA . 98122-5322.  Due January 10th.

WSU College of Agriculture and Home Economics scholarships (CAHE): the following are from the college of Agriculture & Home Economics minimum GPA to apply is 3.3.  Amounts of awards vary.  By filling out one form you will be considered for dozens of scholarship opportunities.  NASA Space Grant scholarship: several awards for up to 4 years of expenses to attend the University of Washington to major in math, engineering, physical or natural sciences.  Write the University of Washington , 352 Johnson hall Box 351650 , Seattle , WA . 98195-1650.   Due January 12th.

Basil & Ella A Jerard endowment scholarship-a $1000 award to incoming freshmen planning to major in English at WSU, may be renewed.  Write English Department or Financial Aid Office, WSU, Pullman , WA . 99164.   Due January 15th.

Japanese American citizens league scholarships: the following awards for students of Japanese heritage:

  • Hagiwara award: varied amounts awarded.
  • Hiratsuka memorial performing arts scholarship: amount varies.
  • JACL national scholarship: 40 awards of $5000, must be a JACL  member.
  • Kuvahara scholarship: 10 awards of varied amounts, top 3 candidates from local chapters are sent on for national consideration.

National Honor Society scholarship: 250 awards of $1000.  Students must be a senior member of NHS, demonstrated leadership, character, scholarship, and service.  ZHS can nominate two students.  $4 entry fee.  Contact your local NHS advisor. Due January 15.

Washington Pest Consultants Association Scholarship: one award of $500 renewable for 4 years for a total of $2000, for a graduating high school senior to continue their education at a community or 4 year college.  Student must be family member of a WPCA member and plan to study horticulture, food science or other agriculture related careers.  Must have at lest a HS GPA of 2.75.  Wrtie WPCA, PO Box 3572 , Pasco , WA 99302 or call 509-547-5538.  Due January 15th.

WSU Journalism scholarship-several awards from $200 to $500 for incoming freshmen who plan to major in journalism at WSU.  Write Journalism Department or Financial Aid Office, WSU, Pullman , WA . 99164-2520.  Due January 15th.

Elk's Club National Foundation, "Most Valuable Student" scholarships: 2 local awards of $150.  Winners compete for district, state, regional, and national awards in a scholarship pool worth over $2,600,000.  Students must have demonstrated outstanding school/community service, leadership, academic achievement, and have clear cut goals for the future.  The application must go to a local lodge first for judging.  Call 1-800-825-ELKS or go to  www.waelks.net/scholarships.htm  for further information. Foundation for Exceptional Children Stanley Jackson scholarships: awards of various amounts for disabled students.  Write 1920 Association Drive , Reston , VA. 22091.    Due January 18th.

AAA traffic safety poster contest: a local award of $100, with chances to compete for national awards totaling $13,000.  open to students 9-12.  Students design a poster and submit it for judging.  Write PO Box 34995 , Seattle , WA . 98124-1995.   Due January 27th.

CWU Music Department scholarships-several scholarships of various amounts, chosen from an audition which is held in march.  Write chairperson, CWU Music Department, Ellensburg , WA . 98926.  Due January 31st.

CWU-Yakima Herald-Republic Music scholarship-3 to 6 scholarships ranging from $500 to $1000, offered to Yakima county high school seniors who plan to major in music at CWU, based on scholarship achievement, and tow letters of recommendation by persons able to assess the applicant's musical ability and an audition.  Write Office of Financial Aid, Ellensburg , WA . 98926. Mensa  Education scholarship: several awards up to $1000.  Students compete for awards on the basis of a 500 word essay.  Write 1521 Riverstone Lane #201 , Boise , ID. 83700.  Due January 31st.

National Association of Hispanic Journalists scholarships: several awards of various amounts for a Hispanic high school senior to continue their education is some form of journalism including broadcasting.  Write 1193 National Press Building, Washington , D.C. 20045 .  Due January 31st.

Phi Delta Kappa scholarships: 42 awards of $1000 and 1 of $2000 for students interested in a career as a teacher.  Write PO Box 789 , Bloomington, IN. 47402.  Due January 31st.

American Geological Institute scholarship for minorities: 46 awards from $500 to $10,000, renewable.  Open to African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans. to study some phase of geoscience.  Must have a 2.8+ GPA and submit ACT/SAT scores.  Write: 4220 King Street , Alexandria , VA 22302-1507 .  Due February 1st.

American Heart Association-Washington affiliate, cardiovascular research scholarship:  6 summer awards of $3000 to juniors & seniors.  $1000 per month during the summer is paid to the students to work in a biomedical research facility and study cardiovascular research. Asian American Journalists Association scholarship awards: several awards of $250-$2500 awarded to Asian descent students pursuing careers in broadcast or print journalism.  Write: 1765 Sutter Street , Room 1000, San Francisco , CA 94115 .  Due February 1st.

Associated Grandmother Clubs of Washington scholarship: awards of $500 to a community college or technical school and $1000 to a four year college.  Awards given based on financial need, demonstrated ability, industriousness, and promise of useful citizenship.  Write: 1133 West Margaret, Pasco , WA . 99301.  Due February 1st.

Council for Exceptional Children scholarship:  awards open to juniors or seniors who are members of CEC.  Special education teacher recommendations is required.  Write: 727 Norma Lane , Aberdeen , WA . 98520.  Due February 1st.

Duracell/National Science Teachers Association scholarship competition: 41 awards totaling $30,000 nationwide.  Scholarships are given to students who design and build battery powered devices which are creative, practical and energy efficient.  Write: 1840 Wilson BLVD, FL 3, Arlington , VA 22201-3000 . Due February 1st.

Gonzaga University Diversity scholarships: several awards of $2500 per year, renewable for four years for a total of $10,000.  Students must be black, Hispanic, Asian or Native American, and must have 3.0 GPA.  Write: Office of Admissions, Gonzaga University , Spokane , WA . 99258-0001.  Due February 1st.

Knights of Columbus National scholarships: Several awards of varying amounts. Eligible candidates for any of these awards must be a member or a son/daughter of a member, must be accepted to a Catholic college. Write: PO drawer 1670, New Haven , CT. 06507 .  Due February 1st.

Kreielsheimer scholarship: 5 awards of full tuition, renewable for 4 years for a student to attend Cornish College of Fine Arts in Seattle with the goal of earning a bachelors of fine arts degree (art, dance, design, music, performance production and/or theater).  Write: 710 East Roy Street , Seattle , WA . 98102.  Due February 1st.

Sons of the American Revolution scholarship: several awards of $100 to $1000.  Students must be interested in the study of American History, write a 5-6 minute speech on a person or event of the American Revolution.  Write: State SAR office for annual contest locations. Washington State Elks vocational grant scholarship: several awards of various amounts for seniors who enroll in a vo-tech or community college in pursuit of a certificate, diploma, or associate degree.  State winners are eligible to compete for the elk's national foundation, vocational grant program: 321 awards of $2000, renewable for a 2nd year, to students to enroll in a vocational-technical course at 2 year college or technical school. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Undergraduate Scholarships:  Several awards from $500-$100 for high school seniors of good character.  Must be accepted to a college or university and submit an essay. WASA-PEMCO 21st century educator scholarship: 3 awards of $1000, renewable for  four years, for a senior who lives in Washington state, is interested in a career in education,  with a 3.0 GPA or better, who is active in a variety of activities, and exhibits leadership. three pools of candidates, 1-Eastern Washington students, 2-Western Washington students, 3-minority students.  Write: 825 Fifth Avenue SE , Olympia , WA . 98501.  Due February 3rd.

Quill and Scroll, National Newspaper Association writing and photo contest: any high school student may enter in one of 10 divisions including editorial, cartoons, news, photo feature, photo sports, feature story, in-depth reporting, advertisement, sports story.   Seniors may also compete for $500 scholarships.  Quill & Scroll society, University of Iowa , Iowa City, IA. 52242-1528.  Due February 5th.

BMI Student Composer Awards: awards ranging from $500 to $2500 for a total of $15,000. Students submit their original compositions, vocal, instrumental or electronic music.  Write: 320 West 57th Street , New York , NY 10019 .  Due February 8th. .

Stonehouse Golf Youth Scholarship: 2 awards of $1000 for any field of study.  is open to high school seniors who are planning to attend college and who participated in high school golf for at least two seasons. Playing golf in college is not a criterion to apply. To be eligible for this award, you must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Your application will be evaluated on a combination of categories, which will include: academics, golf accomplishments and community service participation. International Association of Arson Investigators, John Charles Wilson scholarship: 3 awards of $1000, must be a member in good standing of IAAI or recommended by a member in good standing, to study police/fire science and investigation.  Write: PO Box 91119 , Louisville , KT. 40291.  Due February 15th.

Lifetime Cable TV-Female Athlete scholarship: awards of up to $5000 to a female student age 14-18 with a 3.0 GPA or higher, who is active in at least one school sport and who plans to attend college after graduation.  Contact: 212-424-7286 for information or visit www.lifetimetv.com  for an on-line application. Davis Memorial Scholarship: Yakima resident Mary Monroe "Mollie" Davis has left an educational legacy to Yakima County.  Consistent with Mrs. Davis's bequest, the Yakima Rotary Trust has established a scholarship program to assist residents of Yakima County who plan to continue their education in undergraduate study.  A total of $125,000 in scholarships is expected to be granted each year. If selected as a recipient, the student will receive an annual award of up to $2,500 for a two-year college or up to $7,500 for a four-year college or university.  These scholarships are renewable for qualified students. The applicant must be:
·        A US citizen
·        A Yakima County resident
·        And a high school senior or graduate, a person who has obtained a GED, or a current undergraduate who will be enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited college or university for the entire upcoming academic year.

NAAPAE Scholarship: The National Association for Asian and Pacific American Education (NAAPAE) invites high school seniors to participate in its scholarship program. Although the scholarship committee will consider all applicants; the primary purpose of this scholarship is to support students who plan to become teachers.  NAAPAE will award up to four $500 scholarships to high school seniors who meet the following qualifications: (1) are of Asian or Pacific Islander (API) descent; (2) are actively involved in extracurricular activities in school; (3) have outstanding academic records; (4) are young leaders who show concern and commitment to Asian/Pacific Islander communities; and (5) are citizens or resident aliens of the United States or Canada. National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) Lillian and Arthur Dunn scholarships: 4 awards of $1000 renewable for 4 years for sons or daughters of active members in the Daughters of the American Revolution.  Must be sponsored by the local DAR chapter.  Write: 315 North 56th Avenue , Yakima , WA . 98908. Northwest Career Colleges Federation scholarships:  ZHS may nominate three seniors for a $1000 scholarships to attend technical schools that is a member, such as Perry Tech or ITT Tech.  Application forms are available in the Guidance Center or download online at www.zillahschools.org/financial-aid/scholarshipforms.htm  Due February 15.

Signet Classic Scholarship Essay Contest:  5 awards of $1000 open to juniors or seniors in high school.  See web page for annual contest rules update.  Students write and essay and must be nominated by their English teacher.  Visit www.penguinputnam.com/academic or write Penguin-Putnam Inc., 375 Hudson Street , New York , NY 10014 .  Due February 15th.

WAVE-Washington Award for Vocational Excellence: full waiver of fees (tuition, registration, lab, service and activity fees), for 2 years, to any 2 year or 4 year public college in Washington .  3 awards per legislative district.  Must be nominated by a ZHS CTE instructor. Delta Upsilon Fraternity, University of Washington chapter scholarship: 2 awards of up to $1000 for a male student entering as a freshman to the University of Washington .  Write: 4508 19th Avenue NE , Seattle, WA . 98105.  Due February 25th.

Linda Buschini Memorial Scholarship;  An award of $500 This scholarship is designed to recognize and reward students at Zillah High School who have exemplified good citizenship, service to both school and community, the traits of being a friend to all and a desire to obtain further education and training after high school graduation. Scripps-Howard Foundation Schulz award: 1 award of $3000  for a student who has worked as a newspaper cartoonist and has a 3.5 GPA.  Write: 1100 Central Trust Tower , PO Box 5380 , Cincinnati , OH . 45202.  Due February 25th.

Yakima Valley Credit Union Scholarship: Three (3) scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000.00 each to Yakima Valley Credit Union members. They are; (2) Yakima Valley Credit Union Scholastic Achievement Scholarships, and (1) Harold Bailey Memorial Firefighters' Scholarship. Applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria: must be a member, in good standing of Yakima Valley Credit Union. (You must be a primary member with an account in your own name, or a spouse who is a joint owner on the primary member's account.), must be enrolled, or will be enrolled, in an accredited college, university or trade school, must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.. must be attending college during the school year listed on the scholarship application. American Express Geography contest: several awards totaling $100,000.  Open to all high school students.  Students prepare a written report on one of three categories chosen each year.  Call: 1-800-395-globe.  Due February 28th.

Boy Scouts of America National Eagle Scout scholarships:

  • National Eagle Scout-30 awards of $3000 and 6 of $1000 for graduating seniors who are eagle scouts.  based on need, scholastics, and activities in scouting, school and community.
  • National Society of Sons of the American Revolution-1 award of $2000.
  • Law Enforcement Assistance award-1 award of $1000 for a scout who has assisted an agency of law enforcement.

Central Washington Home Builders association (CWHBA) scholarship: two awards of $500 will be awarded to students graduating from a Yakima, Kittitas or Klickitat county high school.  Awards made based on need, desire to complete an education.  The career goal of the applicant must be construction related.  Write CWHBA 1018 South 33rd Avenue, Yakima, WA 98902, or call 454-4006. Horace Mann scholarship program: several scholarships worth up to $20,000, renewable for up to four years, for sons or daughters of a public school employees.  Must have a 3.0+ GPA and score at least 23 on ACT or 1000 on SAT tests.  Write: PO Box 20490, Springfield, IL. 67208.  Due February 28th.

Washington State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Scholarship: Several awards up to $1000 to a high school senior, of Hispanic heritage, with a 2.5 or better GPA who plans to study at a 2 or 4 year college or vocational institute.  Student should have a record of community involvement.  Write: P.O. Horatio Alger Washington Scholarship Program:  provides financial assistance to students in the State of Washington who have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity and who aspire to pursue higher education. Ten $2,500 scholarships are to be awarded and funded through the generosity of the members of the Horatio Alger Association. To be eligible to apply for the Horatio Alger Washington Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • be enrolled full time as a high school senior in Washington, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the Fall following graduation;
  • have a strong commitment to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution);
  • critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family is preferred, if higher explanation must be provided);
  • involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
  • demonstrate academic achievement (minimum grade point average of 2.0)
  • be a resident of Washington; and be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Coca Cola Scholars Program: 50 scholarships for $20,000 and 200 scholarships for $4000.  Applicants must be leaders in school and/or community, show commitment to quality work and high ideals, excel academically (3.5GPA or higher), and be able to express themselves in a clear, creative manner. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards: 50 awards of $1000 and  5 awards of $5000.  These awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated exemplary, self initiated community service.  Schools may select 1 student for this award.  On student from each state will receive a $1000 award.  State winners then compete for the $5000 awards.  Write: NASSP, 1904 Association Drive , Reston , VA 20191-1537.  Due October 31st (to principals).

DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) American history scholarship: 2 awards of $8000 for a student in the upper third of their class and be interested in majoring in us history.  Write: Washington State DAR HQ, 203 NE 82nd Street , Vancouver , WA . 98665.  Due November 1st.

Herf Jones/Quill & Scroll Yearbook Excellence Contest: open to students 9-12 who are staff members of a high school yearbook.  If a senior wins this award, they are then eligible to compete for the Edward J. Nell memorial scholarship ($500) in journalism. Write: Quill & Scroll Society, U of Iowa , Iowa City, IA. 52242-1528.   Due November 1st.

NASSP Principals Leadership (Herf Jones) award: 150 awards of $1000.  Local principals are allowed to recognize one outstanding student leader from the senior class. The student must be in the upper 20% of class and have demonstrated outstanding leadership.  School winners receive a certificate and may compete for the scholarships.  Write: NASSP, 1904 Association Drive , Reston , VA 20191-1537 .   Due November 1st to local principal.

Washington State University Achievement Awards Scholarship:  Students with a cumulative high school grade-point average (GPA) of 3.4 or higher and ACT of 23 or SAT of 1100 are eligible for an award of $1000 to $3000 if you apply and are accepted at WSU.  If you maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete 24 graded credit hours at WSU, they will renew the awards your second year for a grand total of up to $6000. WSU offers the University Achievement Awards on a first-come, first-served basis. Unlike other awards, these don’t require you to fill out a scholarship application. Western Golf Association Evan’s scholarship: 200 awards of various amounts for students who have been employed for at least 2 years at a golf course.  Write: 155 northeast 100th Street, Suite 302 , Seattle , Washington 98125 .  Due November 1st. 

Bernice Stevens memorial nursing scholarship: awards to students who are accepted  for enrollment at ICNE (intercollegiate center for nursing education EWU, WSU or Whitworth colleges) and have a 3.0 GPA or better. Write: Department of Nursing, WSU, Pullman , WA . 99164.  Due November 8th.

Seattle University Sullivan leadership award: 25 awards ranging from $4200-7200 per year.  ZHS is allowed to nominate up to three students to compete for this award.  Based on leadership, ethical vision, communication, a minimum GPA of 3.5 and must complete a freshman application to Seattle University .  Write: Office of Financial Aid, Seattle University , Seattle , WA . 98122.  Due November 8th.

VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship awards: 6 national awards totaling $33,500, with additional awards for state winners.  Students (grades 10-12) write and record a 3-5 minute script based on a stated patriotic theme.  Write: VFW building, Kansas City , MO 64111 .  Due November 15th.

Benton REA scholarship: 4 awards of $4000 ($1000 per year for 4 years) 2 are academic scholarships and two are vocational scholarships.  years to a son/daughter of a Benton REA member.  You must submit SAT/ACT scores and a 500 word essay.  Write: P.O. CWU Admissions scholarships:  Awards to students who apply to and are accepted to CWU early in the year.  CWU Deans scholarship is for a student with at 3.5 GPA or higher and is good for a $1500 scholarship.  The Trustee scholarship is for a student with a 3.8 GPA or higher and is good for $1800.  There is no application for these awards.  Students who apply early and are qualified by their GPA will receive notification.  Apply on line at www.cwu.edu. Apply by December 1st for CWU admission to be considered. 

National Science Supervisors Association, Thomas Edison-Max McGraw scholarship program: several awards ranging from $750 to $6000.  Open to students in grades 7-12.  Their is no application.  Students submit proposals based on experiments and projects that relate to science, engineering, or inventions.  Winners in each division qualify for trips to a national science convention and for scholarship awards.  Write: NASSA, Copernicus Hall, Suite 227 , CCSU, New Britain , CT. 06050 .   Due December 1st.

National Society of Professional Engineers: 160 awards from $500 to full tuition scholarships, renewable,  to specific schools listed in the NSPE scholarship application.  Students must be in upper 25% of class, have a 3.0 GPA, have SAT of 500v, 600m minimum, be interested in attending an ABET accredited school.  Write: 12828 Northrup Way, Suite 300 , Bellevue , WA . 98005 or 1420 King Street , Alexandria , VA 22314-2794 .  Due December 1st. .

SAE-Society of Automotive Engineers scholarship: awards between $1000-$4000, many of which are renewable, must be a senior in high school, have a 3.5 GPA and be in the 90% on the SAT or ACT exam in both math & verbal and be interested in earning a degree as an engineer.  Write: 400 Commonwealth Drive , Warrendale , PA 15096-0001 .  Due December 1st.

Westinghouse Science scholarships:

  • Talent search: 40 winners share the $140,000 worth of awards, plus each receive a 5 day trip to Washington , dc.  intensive work in science must have been completed including science fair type projects. 
  • Science service scholarships: 30 awards ranging from $1000 to 20,000, renewable, for a student to study science based on a 1000 word research report.
  • Westinghouse family scholarship program: 65 awards of $3000 and 10 renewable awards of $12,000 for a son/daughter of a Westinghouse employee.

The AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to young people throughout the nation. State Winners: Fifty-two winners – one from each state, the District of Colombia and Puerto Rico – are selected by our nonprofit partner, Scholarship America, to receive one-time scholarship awards of $10,000 each.
