About the Club: The motives of all CWE/JSA members are to: Open the doors of minds and cultures to the wide realm of knowledge concerning the events and issues facing today’s world. We will strive to bridge the gap of information and communication through dynamic knowledge, community action, and the open sharing of ideas. What it is: The CWE/JSA is a nationally recognized organization since 1934 designed for the future leaders of America. A completely student-run organization, the CWE/JSA aids in the exchange of ideas through stimulating activities including discussions, debates, conventions, problem-solving and many other events. Why: The CWE/JSA club started as an idea during a leadership conference in Washington DC this past summer. I, Jordie Ricigliano, CWE/JSA President at ZHS was attempting to address a very significant issue facing the small community of Zillah. Because we are often secluded from the wider world and live in a quite rural area, it is very hard to spread the knowledge of world events. There was no place where the community’s youth could congregate to discuss important issues facing our future, and as a result, many students felt they had no place to express their opinions or learn about other views. I saw these interactions happening in lunch lines and before class and often stumbled upon low-scale debates. I wanted to give these affluent minds a place to excel. I wished for the right environment where ideas, opinions, and thoughts could be expressed freely and acceptance of global cultures could be accepted. I finally decided I would stop wishing and start taking action. Months of hard work (and a lot of learning) finally got the Current World Events/ Junior States of America recognized by the ASB and a functioning club at Zillah High School. I have so many ideas for the club but it has been the potential of the members that will drive this club forward. We are all excited for the challenge.
