ZILLAH LEOPARD BASEBALL
2012 SEASON INFORMATION

1.) If you have not played a sport this year, you need to get a physical, insurance waiver, and athletic code signed and turned in to me prior to turning out, February 27th.  Additionally, you may need to check if your physical is still valid.

2.) What you need for practice:

Glove (Cannot have any white of grey on it if you’re a pitcher)

Baseball shoes with metal cleats and tennis/running  shoes.

A hat, preferably the team hat and wear it right way.

Sweats or some long baseball type pants (no shorts/pajama style pants)

Long sleeve that cover the elbow – we wear them until it’s 85 degrees – never ask not to wear one – never show up without one. We never throw with a sweatshirt/hoody-always have a long sleeve on.

A light jacket or sweatshirt.

We strongly advise the use of a protective cup for players at all positions! Do not wear any type of jewellery.  EVER.

We suggest buying a bat that fits you – mark it and don’t let other players use it.
3.) Playing time is earned by:

Performance – performance in practice, intrasquads, and games is the bottom line.  We are constantly evaluating everything and everyone.  We are always looking to find someone doing something right-make sure you’re making us see YOU doing that.

Attitude and effort

Perceived ability to help the team win

Commitment to team goals and team success
It is important to understand that this is not an equal opportunity situation in the sense that you don’t get to play just because you turn out.  This is a competitive situation and the best players play the most. Realistically; however, there is a meaningful playing time for 12 players on each team. We are committed to getting as much playing time for each player at his demonstrated level of ability as circumstances allow for.

4.) Practices and games/attendance policy:

We place an extraordinary emphasis on the value of practice and expect that you attend practice and team functions – without exception. Our team can’t get better if players miss practice. In the event that you are going to miss a practice for an acceptable reason (illness, family, school related) it is your responsibility to let me know personally at the earliest opportunity via phone or e-mail. Missing practice for reasons other than those mentioned above or failing to communicate will result in dismissal from the team. Extreme extenuating circumstances will be considered.

5.)  Drug/Alcohol Code Violations:

The Zillah School District Athletic Code policy for suspension for 1st violations of the policy (i.e. suspension for ¼ season) is intended as a guideline and a minimum number of games that will be missed for a Code Policy.  Zillah Leopard Baseball has a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY for Level 1 Code Violations-you will be asked to turn in your gear and your season will be over.

6.) Daily Logistics/Practice and games

You need to be on the field at 3:05, so clearly you need to hustle from here. Guys who drive are expected to help guys who don’t. In any case, you are expected to drive to the field and away from the field after practice legally and safely.

7.) Dealing with Problems

If you don’t talk to me, we don’t have a problem.  Problems and conflict occur over the course of any season among any group of people.  How we deal with them is crucial in determining the outcome of our season.  You need to talk we me directly so that we can resolve conflicts when they arise.  I will do my best to do that although I cannot guarantee that you will be satisfied, but the key to resolving any problem is to deal with me directly.

ZHS Baseball News

New Bat Rule for High School:  If you are looking to buy a bat for your MS/HS baseball player, the rules have changed as the rules governing body attempts to lesson the ‘jump’ of the ball off the bat. To be legal for use this year, bats must have BBCOR stamped on them.  Previously, bats had BESR stamped on them, those bats are not legal to use in HS baseball any longer.  While it seems like using wood or wood composite bats like the Baum Bats meets the spirit of the rule, unless they have BBCOR stamped on them, they are not legal for use in games.  Baum Bats are a wood composite that is used by the NWAACC, the community college league that plays here in the Northwest, and their website says that they have been BBCOR approved, I am not positive they will have the BBCOR stamp on them.  Baum Bats are a cheaper alternative running about $160 or so per bat, but if they do not have the BBCOR stamp, they can’t be used in High School games.  The baseball program is buying some new BBCOR bats to use, but we encourage our guys to buy a ‘tool’ that fits them personally, particularly if they are going to be playing into the summer.

Honor Roll Baseball Players:  Several players currently in the program earned Honor Roll honors for Fall or 2011-2012 and the coaching staff would like to congratulate them for their achievement.  Good job men!   3.5-3.99 Honor Roll:  Trevor Fink, Garrett LaPierre, Jose  Magana, Garrett Stephens:  3.0-3.49 Honor Roll:  Landon Messmore, Kurt Calhoun
