ZHS School Year-3 Semester System:
Under the Washington State School Reform, ZHS has developed a
special schedule to efficiently and effectively deliver quality
education to our students. We operate three full semesters (Fall,
Winter, and Spring) on a five period day schedule, with extended
classroom periods of 70 minutes each.. Students earn a full
semester credit (.5 credit) for classes completed each semester.
Students complete a years worth of work (1.0 credit) in two
semesters.
School Policy on Post Secondary Visits & Student Contact
-
The policies are the same for all post
secondary partners (military, college and school recruiters). To
help make your visit with our students more productive the following
information is provided.
-
-
Calendars: ZHS master calendars are updated each Monday on the
web. Use our website
www.zillahschools.org/ZHS/calzhs.htm. This may help you
when scheduling campus visits.
- Daily Bulletin: This is where we post and announce information
to our students. The bulletin is posted by 2:30 pm each day for
the next day. It is read over our intercom to all students at
8:00 am each day. A copy is on our high school website
www.zillahschools.org/ZHS/bulletin.htm
- Master Schedules: Are posted on the Website
www.zillahschools.org/ZHS/schedule.htm . If you wish to see
who teaches what, which period, which semester, you can check it
out on line. If you have a presentation that is appropriate for
a specific class, this will help you identify the proper
contact. You must schedule any classroom presentations directly
with the classroom teacher.
- School Day Schedule: ZHS operates from 8:00 am to 2:45 pm with
Lunch at 11:45-12:15. Staff work day is 7:30 to 3:10.
- College-School-Military Displays: Please feel free to drop in
and stock up your display rack in the ZHS Guidance Center. We
try to keep information there for students and parents.
- ZHS Colleges-Schools-Military Websites: Visit the ZHS website
www.zillahschools.org/college/ and/or
www.zillahschools.org/military .
Please let us know if you have updates to add to that site.
- Group meetings: All post secondary opportunity representatives
(recruiting for military, colleges, schools, etc.) may schedule
a 30 minute meeting per semester to meet with interested
students during the school day. Students must pre-register to
attend and must be passing their class in order to the
meeting. Presentation meetings should be scheduled at least one
week in advance.
- Class Presentation: Any request for a presentation to a class
(i.e. history class, physics class) must be made directly with
the individual teacher. You may email them via our website or
call ZHS to schedule such presentations.
- Individual meetings: Individual conferences with students will
not be scheduled during academic time. Appointments on campus
with individual students should be made for 7:30-8:00 (before
school), 11:45-12:15 (lunch), or 2:45-3:15 (after school).
- Lunchroom Tables: Visitations at lunch are welcome, but please
schedule at least 48 hours in advance so we can announce in our
school bulletin. We limit this visit to once per month.
- Newsletters from ZHS: A weekly e-newsletter is sent every
Tuesday morning to students, parents, alumni, community boosters
and post secondary partners (about 700 subscriptions) that
registered to receive it.
- If you have any information you would like me to share with
my parents please send it to John Griffin by 12:00 noon on
Mondays.
- If you would like to be included on my
parents/booster/alumni list to receive a weekly copy of this
news, contact John Griffin.
-
If you distribute an admissions/school newsletter and would
like that news shared with our families, please send me a
copy that allows for copy-cut-past.
- ZHS Student Directory: ZHS releases a School Directory and
will release it to legitimate post-secondary agencies. We release
on September 15 in the fall and May 15 in the spring.
Representatives may request an MS Excel attachment through email
with John Griffin.
- Demographic information update: If you need information on
male-female, total numbers in school, ethnic counts, Mrs. Cindy
Gamache (gamache_c@zsd.wednet.edu)
is our report coordinator in the Superintendents Office. You can
reach her for up-to-date reports at 829-5911.
- Accreditation: Zillah High School is
accredited by the State Board of Education. This accreditation means
that Zillah High School meets all requirements concerning
curriculum, personnel, buildings, equipment, and instructional
materials.
-
- ZHS Mission Statement: It is the mission
of the Zillah High School to foster the following:
- The development of basic skills which
promote self esteem and produce capable, adaptable, contributing
citizens of family, community, national and global society, who
possess a desire to continue their educational development
throughout their lives.
- The maintenance of an open environment
which encourages frequent, positive interactions and in which
every individual is encouraged to participate responsibly in the
decisions which affect their lives. This environment will be one
in which social responsibility, and academic competence, and
excellence are emphasized.
- Provide a safe, supportive environment
where every student and staff member can achieve success.
- ZHS Vision Statement: E4: Educational
Excellence for Everyone, Everyday!
-
- ZHS School Climate Philosophy: School
Climate will be conducive to a positive learning environment that
causes each student to be responsible for his/her own behavior. To
accomplish this goal, the following things must be a part of the
environment:
- All students and faculty must be treated
with fairness, respect, and consistency.
- Trust must be built among the students,
staff, and administrators for all to work together effectively.

housed in four buildings in the mid-Yakima Valley. Zillah is one of
the smallest districts in area in Yakima County (estimated 44 square

Grading: The evaluation of student
achievement is one of the most important functions of the teacher.
The semester grade is the only permanent record of a student’s
progress and credit towards graduation. It is the only grade used
in official GPA calculations. To be eligible for academic honors
and awards a student must be enrolled in 4 of 5 classes letter
graded classes each semester. Grades are not weighted. The grade
system is as follows:
