COLLEGE IN THE HIGH SCHOOL
CREDIT OPTIONS WHILE ENROLLED
AT ZHS
Tech-Prep: Articulation agreements are in place to allow students to complete courses in the Agriculture Science and Business Education programs at ZHS and earn YVCC credit. If the student completes the identified competencies at a "B" level or higher YVCC college credit may be earned. If they enroll at WSU class waivers may be earned. No cost is incurred by the student. Review course descriptions and discuss options with the program instructors (Mrs. Camarata and Ms. Tveter).
Central
Washington University-College in the High School: Junior
or senior students who enroll in designated courses in English and Social
Studies may be able to earn both high school and college credits. Students must pass an ACT or SAT or Compass Test to be
admitted and then complete the course with a B grade or higher in order to earn
the college credit. Currently the
district offers an academic incentive rebate to all students who qualify with a
B grade or higher, which in turn make the tuition still lower.
Cost is $50 per college credit.
Future Teachers Program: The Careers in Education-Future Teacher Academy Program is a two semester class offered in the Zillah School District. The purpose of the course is to allow qualified Juniors and Seniors with potential career interest in education, the opportunity to experience the profession of teaching. Students who complete this program are covering the same objectives and outcomes as the CWU Ed 300 class, which is a 4 credit college course required for teacher certification. Students who complete the objectives of the course at a “B” grade or higher and enroll in CWU within 4 years, may have the Ed 300 course waived, saving $400 in college tuition. Even if a student chooses not to enroll at CWU, the experience gained in this course will be valuable for anyone interested in joining the teaching profession.
Distance
Learning Courses: Students wishing to take a college preparatory or college
level course and that course is not currently offered at ZHS may enroll in a
internet or on line course at an accredited college or university.
Successful completion of the correspondence course will allow for earning
of both high school and college credits. All
costs and fees associated with the course are the responsibility of the student.
Running
Start:
Legislative action has developed a program allowing academically qualified
juniors and seniors in High School to attend their local community college.
This program is called Running Start.
The Running Start student may earn both high school and college credits.
Zillah High School will follow the YVCC Steering Committee guidelines for 11th
& 12th grade students wishing to participate in Running Start.
As required by state law, a public meeting is held each February to
inform students and parents of current 10th & 11th grade students of the
Running Start program procedures. Students must take an ASSET test ($10 fee) at
YVCC. Passing all portions of this test indicates the student is
prepared to attempt college level work. Once
the test is passed, students are offered entrance to the program.
